UK visa photo requirements are stricter and more specific than most countries — and the most common mistake is using a white background (which the UK specifically bans). This guide covers the exact UKVI photo specifications, what causes photos to be rejected, and how to check your photo complies before submitting your application.

Why the UK Bans White Backgrounds

This is the most surprising requirement for many applicants. The UK Home Office requires a plain light-coloured background — specifically light grey or cream. A pure white background fails because it provides insufficient contrast for the biometric facial recognition scan used to process applications. This rule applies to UKVI (visa applications), HM Passport Office, and the DVLA (driving licence applications).

Most Common UKVI Photo Rejection Reasons

  • White or off-white background (must be light grey or cream)
  • Photo taken more than 6 months ago
  • Glasses visible in the photo
  • File size below 50 KB (too heavily compressed) or above 10 MB
  • Shadows on the face or background
  • Head not centred or facing at an angle
  • Head covering (hat, cap, hood) other than religious
  • Hair covering the eyes or obscuring the face outline
  • Photo is black-and-white (must be colour)
  • The 45×35 mm ratio not maintained in a digital crop

How to Prepare a Compliant UKVI Photo

Background

Stand in front of a light grey wall or hang a light grey or cream sheet behind you. Alternatively, use our Passport Photo Maker to automatically replace the background with light grey — the correct colour for UKVI compliance.

Dimensions

For online UKVI submissions, upload a photo that is at least 600 pixels wide and 750 pixels tall. Our tool crops to this ratio automatically with the head positioned in the correct zone.

File size

Your photo must be between 50 KB and 10 MB. Most well-lit smartphone photos are 1–5 MB — within the limit. However, heavily compressed or low-resolution photos may fall below 50 KB and will be rejected. Our tool outputs photos in the correct size range by default.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a white background for a UK visa photo?

No. The UKVI specifically requires a plain light-coloured background — light grey or cream. A pure white background will cause your photo to be rejected. This is the most common mistake made by applicants following US passport photo rules (which DO require white).

Do I need to remove glasses for a UK visa photo?

Yes. UK visa and passport photos have not allowed glasses since 2015. All applicants must remove glasses regardless of prescription or medical need. There is no medical exemption process for this requirement.

What if my UKVI photo file is under 50 KB?

Photos under 50 KB are rejected by the UKVI portal — they are considered too compressed and low-quality for biometric processing. If your photo is under 50 KB, reduce the compression. Our Passport Photo Maker outputs photos above the 50 KB minimum by default.

Can I use a selfie for my UK visa application?

Technically yes, as long as it meets all requirements — but it's very difficult to achieve the correct background colour, head positioning, and lighting with a selfie. Using a mirror selfie is not acceptable (it reverses the image). If you must use a selfie, ensure the background is light grey and use the front-facing camera at eye level.

How long is a UKVI photo valid?

UKVI requires the photo to have been taken within the last 6 months. There is no specific expiry on a previously accepted photo — if your visa expires and you reapply, you'll need a fresh photo regardless of how recent your previous one was.
