Canada Document Guidelines
Applying for Canadian PR, citizenship, or a visa? Get the exact photo pixel dimensions, PDF size caps, and format rules for IRCC, Express Entry, and Canada passport portals.
Canada's Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) online portal is one of the most specific government systems in the world when it comes to photo upload requirements. For Permanent Residence applications via Express Entry, the portal enforces a minimum of 420×540 pixels, but for certain PR categories the minimum jumps to 715×1000 pixels — and file size must fall between 420 KB and 4 MB.
A common mistake is submitting a photo that looks high-quality but falls below the minimum pixel dimension — IRCC's automated validator rejects these immediately without flagging which specific rule was violated, leaving applicants confused about the error.
Canada also prohibits AI-enhanced or digitally retouched photos, which is increasingly enforced as AI image tools become more common. The IRCC system uses biometric data from your submitted photo, so any alteration to facial geometry — even subtle smoothing — can cause a rejection that delays your application by weeks.

Canada Rejection Prevention Checklist
- Minimum 715×1000 px for Express Entry PR: IRCC's PR portal enforces a higher minimum resolution than the standard study/work permit portal. A photo that passes for a visitor visa may be rejected for your PR application.
- No AI Retouching: IRCC explicitly prohibits photos enhanced with AI tools, beauty filters, or digital smoothing. This is actively enforced by their biometric system.
- File Size Must Be At Least 420 KB: Unlike most portals that only set a maximum, IRCC also sets a minimum of 420 KB. Photos that are too small (too compressed) are rejected alongside those that are too large.
- 70–80% Face Fill: Your face must fill between 70% and 80% of the frame. A photo taken from too far away (face filling less than 70%) or too close (over 80%) will fail validation.
- PDF Legibility for ECA Reports: Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) reports compressed too aggressively may lose readability on seals and watermarks. Test at 200% zoom before submitting.
Frequently Asked Questions — Canada Document Uploads
Common questions about file sizes, photo requirements, and portal-specific rules.
What is the minimum photo size for IRCC Express Entry PR applications?
For Express Entry Permanent Residence, IRCC requires a minimum photo size of 715×1000 pixels (or equivalent for the 50×70 mm print standard). The file must be between 420 KB and 4 MB in JPEG format. Note that this is stricter than the standard IRCC portal for visitor visas, which accepts a minimum of 420×540 pixels.
Why does IRCC reject photos that are too small in file size?
IRCC enforces a minimum file size of 420 KB to ensure sufficient image data for biometric facial processing. An overly compressed image (even at high pixel dimensions) may not contain enough detail for the system. Use our photo compressor and avoid going below 450 KB for IRCC applications.
Can I compress my ECA report PDF before uploading to Express Entry?
Yes, but compress carefully. ECA reports from WES, IQAS, or ECE often contain security watermarks and seals that must remain legible. We recommend using "Recommended" compression mode in our PDF compressor rather than "Extreme" for credential documents.
What happens if my IRCC photo is rejected during upload?
IRCC's portal typically returns a generic "photo does not meet requirements" error without specifying which rule was violated. Common causes are: dimensions below 420×540 px, file size outside the 420 KB–4 MB range, non-JPEG format, or face fill ratio below 70%.
Are scanned paper documents accepted for IRCC applications?
Yes. IRCC accepts scanned documents in PDF or JPEG format up to 4 MB per file. Scans must be clear, in color where the original is in color, and all text must be legible. Use our JPG to PDF tool to combine multiple scan pages into one PDF file.
