The UPSC online application portal has strict file size requirements for both the photograph and signature. Missing these limits — even by a few kilobytes — results in an instant upload error. This guide gives you the exact UPSC specs for 2026, explains what causes rejections, and shows you how to compress and prepare both files correctly.

- File size outside the 20–50 KB range (most common — even 51 KB fails)
- Photo taken more than 6 months ago
- Casual or informal attire visible
- Non-white or patterned background
- Wearing sunglasses or tinted glasses
- Blurry image due to over-compression
- Wrong format (PNG submitted instead of JPEG)
How to Compress Your Photo to 20–50 KB for UPSC
Step 1: Start with a quality photo
Take a clear, front-facing photo against a white background in good natural or studio lighting. Avoid harsh shadows. The source image should be at least 600×800 pixels so that compression preserves quality.
Step 2: Resize to 3.5×4.5 cm
At 96 DPI (screen), 3.5×4.5 cm = approximately 132×170 pixels. At 300 DPI (print), it's 413×531 pixels. Most UPSC portals accept the screen-resolution version. Use our Passport Photo Maker to crop and resize automatically.
Step 3: Compress to 20–50 KB
Open our Compress Image tool, upload your photo, and set a target of 40 KB (leaving 10 KB of headroom below the 50 KB limit). The tool's "Target Size" mode lets you specify an exact KB target. Download the result and verify the file size before uploading to UPSC.
How to Prepare Your Signature for UPSC
Step 1: Sign on white paper
Use a black or dark blue ballpoint pen. Sign on plain white A4 paper with no lines or patterns. Your signature should be the same one you use on government documents.
Step 2: Scan or photograph it
Scan at 200 DPI in black-and-white, or photograph the signature with a smartphone camera in good lighting. Crop the image to show only the signature with a small white margin on all sides.
Step 3: Compress to 10–20 KB
Upload the signature image to our Signature Compressor tool and set a target of 15 KB. This ensures you're within the 10–20 KB range. The tool preserves signature clarity while hitting the size target.
